Albany, KY- May 10, 2008- The
Battle of the Bluegrass DirtCar Series Open Wheel Modified
division presented by Graphic Impressions returned to action
after a four week layoff at the James Brown promoted Clinton
County Speedway in Albany, KY and Kelly Warren of Columbia,
KY would score his first series victory since 2006 and
picked up the $1,500 first place prize money.
The win by the 2004 series champion is his third series
victory and came aboard the Jeff Crawford and Kelly Warren
owned, Commonwealth Cancer Centers/GSM Painting/Roberts
Construction/Auto Smart of Campbellsville sponsored #0
Lightning Chassis, Scott Pass Competition Engines powered
machine. Warren’s winning mount receives product support
from AFCO Racing Products, American Racer Tires, Frankland
Racing Equipment, PBM Performance Products, and Wayne Bowen
Racing Supply.
Current series points leader and three-time defending
champion Joey Kramer would take runner-up honors, Don Adams,
Tim York, and Skylar Marlar completing the top five. The
remainder of the top ten would be Hard Charger winner Mick
Sansom, Josh Coffey, Valis Smedley, Robert Potter, and
Matthew Potter.
Two cautios would fly before the race officially got started
for a pair of multi-car incidents. Once the green waved, Don
Adams would take the initial lead, followed by Skylar Marlar
and Robert Potter. Marlar would drive by Adams for the lead
on lap 3, with action slowed one circuit later for a
backchute flip by Shawn Tolson, that would result in a red
flag period. Back under green, Kelly Warren was flexing his
muscles and grabbed the top spot away from Marlar on lap 5,
with Adams, 7th starting Joey Kramer, and Potter going third
through fifth. Lap 8 would see Tim York make his way into
the top five past Potter, with the caution waving again one
lap later for Wayne James, who stopped on the racing surface
with mechanical problems.
The front five remained the same until the next caution on
lap 14 for a spin by Tommy Gregory. The resulting restart
would see Adams scoot by Marlar for second, but the caution
would fly two circuits later on lap 16 for a spin by Robert
Potter. Second place Adams stay in second would be short
lived as Kramer would peddle his mount around both Adams and
Marlar to take second on lap 17 on the restart. The final
caution of the race would fly on lap 18 when Potter looped
his unit for the second time and would be required to pull
pitside because of the two spin rule.
Business would pick up at the point on the restart and
Kramer would take the lead from Warren on lap 21, with the
front duo settling into a side-by-side battle all around the
3/10 mile James Brown promoted red clay oval. Warren would
muscle back in front for good on lap 26 and lead the final
five circuits to claim the victory.
In preliminary action, Joey Kramer was top qualifier among
20 entries with a time of 13.119 seconds. Qualifying heat
events were scored by Don Adams, Wayne James, and Robert
Potter.
The next event for the Modified division of the Battle of
the Bluegrass DirtCar Series will take place on Saturday May
17 at the David and Anita Ferrell promoted Bluegrass
Speedway in Bardstown, KY. The event will pay $1,500 to win.
