Kramer Wins 4th
Annual Railroad Days Showdown at Ponderosa Speedway
Junction City, KY-August
22, 2008- The Battle of the Bluegrass DirtCar Series Open Wheel
Modified division presented by Graphic Impressions visited the Larry,
Chad, and Sarah Yantz promoted Ponderosa Speedway in Junction City, KY
and Joey Kramer of Hanover, IN would win his fourth straight Railroad
Days Showdown event and pick up $1,500 for his work on the evening.
Kramer’s victory marked
his eighth series win for the 2008 season and was his 21st career
A-Main win with the series. The winner’s machine is a Lightning
Chassis, powered by a Bullock by Kramer Race Engine and receives
sponsorship from Fox Custom Cabinets, Wild’s Restoration Service,
Larry’s Truck Service, Hill’s Historic Painting, Bright Beginnings
Child Care, SuperATV.com, and State Farm Insurance. Product support
for Kramer’s winning mount comes from PBM Performance Products, AFCO
Race Products, NAPA, and Valvoline.
Josh Lucas of Bardstown,
KY would take runner-up honors in the race aboard his Lucas Oil
Products/Riggs Electric sponsored Lightning Chassis, while Jason
Wheatley of Loretto, KY would score a third place finish in the B&W
Metals/VFM Manufacturing sponsored Jason Hughes Racing Chassis. Randy
Turpin of Lebanon, KY would capture fourth place in his Cedarwood
Restaurant/Kay’s Barber Shop sponsored Bandit Race Car, while Kelly
Warren of Columbia, KY completed the top five behind the wheel of the
Commonwealth Cancer Centers/GSM Painting sponsored Lightning Chassis.
The start of the 30 lap
A-Main would see Joey Kramer take the lead from his pole starting
position, with Jason Wheatley, Josh Lucas, Benji Lee, and Kelly Warren
in pursuit. Lee would drive past Lucas for third on lap 2 and
immediately begin to pressure Wheatley for second. The caution waved
on lap 5 for a slowing Bobby Neal down the backchute. The attempted
restart would also be called back when Don Adams would loop his mount
in turn three, collecting six more cars in the process, with Adams
parking his unit for the evening. Back underway, Kramer would stave
off the challenge of Wheatley for the lead and put a bit of distance
between himself and rest of the field with 10 laps scored in the
event.
Kramer would begin the
process of working slower traffic on lap 11 and would pull out almost
a full straightaway lead when the halfway signal was shown to the
field on lap 15. The battle for second would heat up at this point
behind Kramer as Wheatley and Lee would battle for the runner-up slot
until lap 19 when Lee would spin his machine in the middle of turns
three and four and draw what would be the final caution of the event.
Back underway, Kramer would again begin to pull away from the pack,
while Lucas would pass Wheatley for second in turn three on lap 20,
with Randy Turpin moving from fifth to fourth past Warren on the same
circuit.
The final ten laps would
see Kramer continue his torrid pace at the point and see the series
points leader lengthen his lead considerable over the final few
circuits and drive to the checkered flag first in the event, with
Lucas finishing second ahead of third place finishing Wheatley, while
Turpin and Warren would complete the top five.
Elliott Despain would head
up the second five at the finish after charging through the field
after restarting at the rear after a flat left front tire on lap 5.
J.T. Ayers would finish seventh, while Lee would mount a charge back
up through the field as well and nip Kevin Nesselhauf for eighth, with
Russ Gabbert rounding out the top ten after starting in 20th
position.
In preliminary action,
Joey Kramer was top qualifier among 31 entries with a lap time of
14.947 seconds. Qualifying heat checkered flags would go to Kramer in
Wayne Bowen Racing Supply heat one, Wheatley in K&N Performance
Engineering heat two, Lee in Graphic Impressions heat three, and Lucas
in Real Racing Wheels heat four. Jeff Stith and Mick Sansom were the
B-Main winners, while Shawn Tolson and Robbie Gullion would earn
series provisionals, with Shane McKenney taking the track
provisional.
The next event for the
Modified division of the Battle of the Bluegrass DirtCar Series will
be on Friday August 29 at the Kim and Kevin Moler promoted Moler
Raceway Park in Williamsburg, OH for a $1,500 to win event. This is a
make-up that was rained out back on June 13 and will mark the first
ever visit to the state of Ohio for the “BoB Mod Squad”.
